Ink & Steel; The Body Modification Photography of Efrain John Gonzalez is a collection of over 200 portraits of pierced, tattooed and bodily modified people. Judson Rosebush assisted in compiling this book. He refers to Gonzalez as an anthropologist due to his vast knowledge of highly unorthodox people in various subcultures. Gonzales is the most at home with documenting erotic, unusual, and sexually extreme imagery.  A lot of the images were taken at tattoo conventions or fetish shows. Many images have a candid and fun spunkiness.

Gonzalez obviously has quite an eye and has a marvelous time documenting fascinating and vivid individuals. Rosebush expands on Gonzalez's unique talent," But there is more to this kind of photography than just being at the venue; soul-revealing pictures require trust. It helps to know the scene and the rules; and it helps to know how to read the language of the body. What makes these pictures so special is not not just their documentation of body modification; the pictures are really about the people who are making statements of self."
