Mark Sultan's live, one take album, 'The War On Rock'n'Roll',
out now as free download or limited edition vinyl
through In The Red Records
featuring artwork by Gary Panter.
Mark Sultan has been a long-time fixture in the 'garage rock' scene, having played in such bands as The King Khan & BBQ Show, The Almighty Defenders (Sultan, Khan, Black Lips), BBQ, The Ding-Dongs (with Bloodshot Bill), The Spaceshits, Les Sexareenos, Mind Controls, etc... and has released a bunch of records on labels that include In The Red, Last Gang, Crypt, Fat Possum, Dirtnap, Goner, Sub Pop, Vice, Bomp!, Norton, and Sympathy For The Record Industry.. He has toured North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia , Israel and everywhere in between. People like Jon Spencer and Bradford Cox have covered his songs, and his voice is often cited as being one of the finest rock'n'roll voices of today, as well as being called 'patient zero' and a main influence in the modern garage/doo-wop sound. A cult figure, an underrated gem and sorcerer, Mark continues to hammer out top-shelf releases and songs while touring incessantly, his live act said to sound and feel like "a haunted stereo playing pirate radio, complete with all of the static and anticipation". Some have also said: "The best one-man band going, absolutely devoid of insincerity or gimmick", and "pure magic".

Last October, Mark released two new albums on vinyl for In The Red Records; 'Whatever I Want' and "Whenever I Want', respectively, with a CD release entitled 'Whatever/Whenever' following their heels, containing songs from each album (13 of a total 26). The material is in a similar vein that Mark has mined for several years: early rock'n'roll, psych, avant garde, free jazz, doo wop, early r&b, garage punk, punk rock, etc... thrown in a pot and simmered over his incredible vocals. Covers of such artists as Ultravox, The Stains, The Lords and a couple more round out the collection. Collaborators included Choyce (Red Mass), Jared (Black Lips), Cole (Black Lips), Erin (Spits), Danny (The Gories), Matteo and Davide (Mojomatics). The two albums were joined by 7" releases in the US, including a split with the Black Lips, as well as one of 3 new 7"s on Mark's own Sultan Records imprint.
For for those willing to dig deeper, a free download and limited edition vinyl full-length entitled 'The War On Rock'n'Roll' (complete with manifesto), are now available through In The Red Records and features artwork by Gary Panter. Recorded one night in September of 2011 at Clube Berlin in Sao Paolo, Brazil, by Jonas Morbach, the record is one take/first take, live onto 1/2" reel and 4-track cassette.
